The plant known as Homalomena ‘Emerald Gem’ was introduced in the 1980s. In air purification studies, species of Homalomena have been singled out for their ability to filter toxins from the air, including the industrial toxins ammonia, formaldehyde, and xylene, which have been linked to respiratory issues and even an increased risk of cancer. In a study published by the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, Homalomena species were especially effective at getting rid of ammonia. They are also used to increase oxygen levels indoors.

Other members of the Homalomena genus have been used in traditional Chinese and Tamil medicine for centuries, but never ingest any part of the common Emerald Gem.
